"Hijacking the World
The dark side of Microsoft.
Roberto Di Cosmo and Dominique Nora (French version published by Calmann-Levy 1998, ISBN 2-7021-2923-4)"

"People in Europe tend to be a bit shy about saying these things. Microsoft is criticized
because people here are afraid of American cultural imperialism, or because they're afraid
of globalization, and Bill Gates is an emblem for this, or simply because they're scared to
death by technology..."

"My reasons for criticizing Microsoft are much more basic, and, I think, less subjective than
that. I have a deep love for technology, and it is exactly for this reason that I cannot
accept seeing it corrupted by a company that designs bad products, which are sold too
expensively to consumers who are subjugated by them, a company that –we will see how
later– has contempt for its customers, does not play fairly with its competitors, and
stifles innovation. Like many others, I cherish a dream of technological progress leading
to a better world, a world that is freer and has more solidarity. But I can ensure you that
such a world looks nothing like the world that Bill Gates dreams of."

"Windows Vista
Any operating system that provokes a campaign for its predecessor's reintroduction deserves to be classed as terrible technology. Any operating system that quietly has a downgrade-to- previous-edition option introduced for PC makers deserves to be classed as terrible technology. Any operating system that takes six years of development but is instantly hated by hordes of PC professionals and enthusiasts deserves to be classed as terrible technology."

quando passam o excelente documentário do jornalista australiano, John Pilger, "The war on democracy"?

The War on Democracy

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

"The War on Democracy is a 2007 documentary film directed by Christopher Martin and John Pilger. Focusing on the political state of Latin America, the film is a rebuke of both the United States' intervention in foreign countries' domestic politics, and its war on terrorism."

"Set both in Latin America and the United States, the film explores the historic and current relationship of Washington with countries such as Venezuela, Bolivia and Chile.
Pilger claims that the film "...tells a universal story... analysing and revealing, through vivid testimony, the story of great power behind its venerable myths. It allows us to understand the true nature of the so-called "war on terror". According to Pilger, the film’s message is that the greed and power of empire is not invincible and that people power is always the "seed beneath the snow".
Pilger interviews several ex-CIA agents who purportedly took part in secret campaigns against democratic countries and who he claims are profiting from the war in Iraq. He investigates the School of the Americas in the U.S. state of Georgia, where General Pinochet’s torture squads were reportedly trained along with tyrants and death-squad leaders in Haiti, El Salvador, Brazil and Argentina."

war on terror...(des)governos?

The greatest threat to our freedom today is not terrorism, but what governments are doing to counter this perceived terrorist threat.

Let me say that again. Terrorism is not the real danger we face, it's what governments around the world are doing to make us "safe."

  • If I'm not doing anything wrong, then you have no cause to watch me.
  • Because the government gets to define what's wrong, and they keep changing the definition.
  • Because you might do something wrong with my information.
  • Who watches the watchers?
  • Absolute power corrupts absolutely.

'I've Got Nothing to Hide' and Other Misunderstandings of Privacy
DANIEL J. SOLOVE
George Washington University Law School

"If one would give me six lines written by the hand of the most honest man, I would find something in them to have him hanged."

The Eternal Value of Privacy

Bruce Schneier
The most common retort against privacy advocates -- by those in favor of ID checks, cameras, databases, data mining and other wholesale surveillance measures -- is this line: "If you aren't doing anything wrong, what do you have to hide?"

Some clever answers: "If I'm not doing anything wrong, then you have no cause to watch me." "Because the government gets to define what's wrong, and they keep changing the definition." "Because you might do something wrong with my information." My problem with quips like these -- as right as they are -- is that they accept the premise that privacy is about hiding a wrong. It's not. Privacy is an inherent human right, and a requirement for maintaining the human condition with dignity and respect.

Two proverbs say it best: Quis custodiet custodes ipsos? ("Who watches the watchers?") and "Absolute power corrupts absolutely."

A Quick Guide to GPLv3

After a year and a half of public consultation, thousands of comments, and four drafts, version 3 of the GNU General Public License (GPLv3) was finally published on June 29. While there's been a lot of discussion about the license since the first draft appeared, not many people have talked about the benefits that it provides developers. We've published this guide to fill that gap. We'll start with a brief refresher on free software, copyleft, and the goals of the GPL. We'll then review the major changes in the license to see how they advance those goals and benefit developers.

National Lawyers Guild Unanimously Passes Resolution on Impeachment of Bush and Cheney
At the National Lawyers Guild 70th Anniversary Law for the People Convention, being held October 31 - November 4 in Washington DC, the membership "unanimously and enthusiastically passed a resolution supporting the impeachment of Bush and Cheney." While alleged crimes relating to 9/11/01 are inexplicably omitted from the points of this resolution, it is nonetheless an extremely significant undertaking, including powerful implementation resolutions to demand investigation, support and work with impeachment efforts, and encourage all other groups and citizens "to adopt similar resolutions and to use all their resources to build the campaign demanding that Congress initiate impeachment investigation, impeach, and remove Bush and Cheney from office without further delay." We applaud the courage and strength of the National Lawyers Guild, and are grateful for their continuing work on behalf of all of us.

Resolution on Impeachment of Bush and Cheney

Whereas George W. Bush and Richard B. Cheney:

1. deliberately misled the nation and doctored intelligence, as described in
the Downing Street minutes, http://www.downingstreetmemo.com/memos.html about
the threat from Iraq in order to justify a war of aggression and an occupation
of Iraq, as further described in House resolution H.Res. 333: http://kucinich.house.gov/UploadedFiles/int3.pdf and as listed in House Resolution H. Res. 635: http://www.govtrack.us/congress/billtext.xpd?bill=hr109-635

2. committed crimes against peace by initiating war against Iraq in violation
of the UN Charter http://www.worldpress.org/specials/iraq/ ;

3. committed crimes against humanity in their conduct of the occupation of
Iraq in which they killed hundreds of thousands of Iraqi civilians and created
millions of refugees http://www.guardian.co.uk/Iraq/Story/0,,1892888,00.html
and http://edition.cnn.com/2006/WORLD/meast/10/13/iraq.main/index.html ;

4. killed over 3700 American soldiers and severely wounded nearly 30,000 more
in the pursuit of an illegal, immoral, and unjust occupation of Iraq. While
Bush and Cheney have stated no truthful noble cause for the war, one of the
central purposes appears to be to take control of Iraq's immense oil reserves
to financially benefit private corporate interests. See Bush's benchmark listing
fact sheet released the same day Bush announced the "surge" that expressly
called on the Iraq parliament to "enact hydrocarbons law to promote investment
. . . " http://www.whitehouse.gov/news/releases/2007/01/20070110-3.html
and http://www.alternet.org/waroniraq/56672/
;

5. committed further crimes against peace by threatening Iran in violation
of the UN Charter, as described in House resolution H. Res. 333 http://thomas.loc.gov/cgibin/query/z?c110:H.RES.333:
and http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/middle_east/6649053.stm ;

6. detained thousands of prisoners without charges and without providing the
ability to confront their accusers at a fair trial http://thereport.amnesty.org/eng/Regions/Americas/United-States-of-America
;

7. condoned the torture of prisoners in violation of the Geneva Conventions,
the US anti-torture statute of 1994, the US War Crimes Act of 1996, and the
oath of office http://hrw.org/english/docs/2004/05/24/usint8614.htm
and http://thereport.amnesty.org/eng/Regions/Americas/United-States-of-America
and http://www.boston.com/news/nation/articles/2006/03/24/bush_shuns_patriot_act_requirement/
.

Bush's refusal to faithfully execute the laws prohibiting torture and his declaration
on February 7, 2002 that the Geneva Conventions did not apply to prisoners in
Afghanistan and in Guantanamo set the stage for torture there http://hrw.org/reports/2004/usa0604/2.htm
. The Rumsfeld approved Guantanamo torture techniques were then imported to
Iraq in August 2003, where the International Committee of the Red Cross found
"systemic" mistreatment of Iraqi prisoners in several facilities and
where the Schlesinger Report confirmed in August 2004 that abuses were "widespread"
and "serious both in number and in effect," and that there is both
"institutional and personal responsibility at higher levels" ;

8. approved at least two different illegal electronic surveillance programs
of American citizens without a warrant in violation of the fourth amendment
and in violation of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act of 1978, and repeatedly
lied to the American people by stating that

no surveillance was taking place without a court order. The first program includes
intercepting phone and email conversations without warrants and was exposed
by the NY Times on December 16, 2005 http://emoglen.law.columbia.edu/CPC/NYT_15cnd-program.html
. After that program was exposed Bush said the program was carefully targeted
to just include international calls and suspected members of Al Qaeda. Then,
the second program was exposed by USA Today on May 11, 2006. It provides
a wholesale attack on the fourth amendment by recording call identification
information of tens of millions of purely domestic calls as well as international
calls http://www.usatoday.com/news/washington/2006-05-10-nsa_x.htm
;

9. attacked basic human rights protections in the constitution including habeas
corpus, fifth amendment freedom from loss of life, liberty and property without
due process of law, eighth amendment freedom from cruel and unusual punishment,
and fourth amendment freedom from

unreasonable search and seizure ;

10. attacked the separation of powers in an effort to consolidate power in
the executive;

11. attacked the messenger who revealed that Bush "twisted" intelligence
"to exaggerate the Iraqi threat." Just as Nixon retaliated against
former Pentagon analyst Daniel Ellsberg http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daniel_Ellsberg
, according to papers filed in court by special prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald in April 2006, there was "concerted action"
by "multiple people in the White House" to "discredit, punish
or seek revenge against" former Ambassador Joseph Wilson for his July 6,
2003 NY Times op ed piece http://www.nytimes.com/2003/07/06/opinion/06WILS.html?ex=1372824000&en=6c6aeb1ce960
dec0&ei=5007

that ripped the cover off of Bush's false assertions in his 2003 state of the
union address that Iraq was trying to buy uranium from Africa for building a
nuclear bomb. In retaliation, and to silence other would-be critics, the White
House collected information about Wilson and disclosed to reporters that his
wife, Valerie Plame, was a covert agent in the CIA counterinsurgency division,
putting her life, and the lives of her contacts, at risk in violation of a US
law protecting intelligence personnel (The Impeachment of George W. Bush,
by Elizabeth Holtzman) ;

12. as the sole person under the Federal Stafford Act with responsibility and
authority to issue emergency orders to mobilize the military and any federal
resources needed to aid and assist in a disaster (see Failure of Initiative,
February 2006 report of the House Select Bipartisan Committee to investigate
the Preparations for and the Response to Hurricane Katrina http://katrina.house.gov/
), Bush failed to take care that the laws be faithfully executed, violated the
public trust, and demonstrated reckless and inexcusable indifference to human
life before, during and after Hurricane Katrina. Bush knew but did not act until
too late, and then he lied about it on national TV. Footage and transcripts
from briefings Aug. 25-31 demonstrate that Bush was personally told well in
advance of the "unprecedented strength" of the hurricane, the "devastating
damage expected," and that "water shortages will make human suffering
incredible," according to highly accurate predictions by the National Weather
Service. The Associated Press reported that "in dramatic and sometimes
agonizing terms, federal disaster

officials warned President Bush and his homeland security chief before Hurricane
Katrina struck that the storm could breach levees, put lives at risk in New
Orleans' Superdome and overwhelm rescuers, according to confidential video footage,"
http://www.truthout.org/cgibin/artman/exec/view.cgi/47/18079
. Yet Bush failed to muster resources to evacuate residents in advance and failed
to assist New Orleans residents after Hurricane Katrina hit. Then three days
later Bush told Good Morning America, "I don't think that anybody anticipated
a breach of the levees." http://www.washingtonpost.com/wpdyn/content/article/2006/03/02/AR2006030202130.html
In years before the storm Bush demonstrated inexcusable criminal negligence
and violated the public trust by cutting the budget for hurricane defense, though
the high probability of the breaching of the levees and the enormous risk to
human life from a major hurricane hitting New Orleans were predicted and well
known for years before the hurricane hit http://www.cnn.com/2005/US/09/03/katrina.chertoff/index.html
;

13. failed to take care that the laws be faithfully executed by issuing signing
statements that claim the authority to disobey laws based on the president's
own interpretation of their constitutionality, and then by taking action in
violation of these laws, including the US law making torture a crime, laws regarding
Congressional oversight that require providing information to Congress, laws
regarding domestic spying, laws regarding civil liberties, and laws strengthening
whistle blower protection, thereby expanding the president's own power by stepping
into the legislative and judicial functions at the expense of Congress and the
courts, upsetting the balance among the three Branches of government, and moving
us away from the rule of law toward vastly increased executive power; http://www.boston.com/news/nation/articles/2006/04/30/bush_challenges_hundreds_of_laws/
and
http://www.boston.com/news/nation/articles/2006/03/24/bush_shuns_patriot_act_requirement/
;

14. converted the Justice Department into an arm of the Republican Party by
firing meritorious federal prosecutors who refused to base decisions on whom
to prosecute on political considerations--to help Republicans win election,
an offense James Madison discussed in a

speech to the Senate on June 17, 1789, in which Madison said, "The
danger then consists merely in this, the president can displace from office
a man whose merits require that he should be continued in it. What will be the
motives which the president can feel for such abuse of his power, and the restraints
that operate to prevent it? In the first place, he will be impeachable by this
house, before the senate, for such an act of mal-administration; for I contend

ODF formato e a ODF fundação

"Okay, lets get one thing straight…

Repeat after me :

“The Open Document Foundation has nothing to do with the Open Document Format”

“The Open Document Foundation has nothing to do with the Open Document Format”

“The Open Document Foundation has nothing to do with the Open Document Format”

Really, they should change their name. For one thing, it’s confusing and diluting the acronym for the Open Document Format. Another thing is, they, (The Open Document Foundation - see what I mean?) appear to be very, very confused about what they are doing; or if they’re not confused about what they’re doing, then they’re being very successful at confusing everyone else."

The Foreign Office has already linked its foreign missions in a network using open-source programs and shifted to OpenOffice and Linux operation systems on their laptops and has in view to extend this program to all diplomatic workstations by the middle of 2008.

Brazil and India are also leaders in the use of open standards in the office area. Deivi Kuhn of Serpro, a company coordinating the use of open source in
Brazil, declared that ODF standard adopted by the International Organization for Standardization, a good tool providing both access to knowledge
and ensuring user freedoms, was mandatory for e-government state interoperability standards. In India, in the federal state of Assam, PCs with Linux and OpenOffice were given to students and the migration to open source software was in progress in government offices.

FlyBack a TimeMachine do GNU/Linux

"FlyBack is a snapshot-based backup tool based on rsync It creates successive backup directories mirroring the files you wish to backup, but hard-links unchanged files to the previous backup. This prevents wasting disk space while providing you with full access to all your files without any sort of recovery program. If your machine crashes, just move your external drive to your new machine and copy the latest backup using whatever file browser you normally use.

Note that this means you can selectively delete specific backups and still retain files stored in previous ones. (ie., you can delete tuesday's backup and keep monday's, without screwing up wednesday's).

Ways FlyBack Differs from Time Machine

1. There is no inotify mechanism in Linux, so FlyBack scans your entire directory structure when performing a backup.
2. No hard-linking of directories is supported under Linux, so we waste a few KBs recreating unchanged directory structures with nothing but hard-links in them."

FABULOSO.... ;)

gOS o futuro sistema operativo do google?

"Well, I guess a couple things happened… I got interested in Google applications, especially docs and spreadsheets, presentations; and originally, I wanted to create my idea of what a Google OS would look like.. if there were such a mythical OS. As I started looking around at all the Google applications out there, I realized that all of our “computing” could eventually be done in the Google cloud. We just needed an OS that looked really good and pointed people to Google in a really friendly, intelligent way. After seeing this, I got excited because I saw it was also commercially viable for the mainstream end user… Google makes Linux familiar."

O Fanático Bush quer a III guerra mundial (Parte1)...

The Prince of Darkness", Paul Wolfowitz, General Colin Powel, Condoleeza Rice, Douglas J. Feith, etc.

Um dos documentos mestres da política que estes senhores prentenderam implementar desde sempre é o PNAC (project for a new american century), o objectivo deste projecto, afirmado nele, é promover a liderança mundial dos USA principalmente através de "from the belief that America should seek to preserve and extend its
position of global leadership by maintaining the preeminence of U.S.
military forces."
, como é citado no Rebuilding America's Defenses: Strategies, Forces, and Resources For a New Century (2000).

É também no PNAC que aparece mencionado que "the process of transformation, even if it brings revolutionary change,is likely to be a long one, absent some catastrophic and catalyzing event -- like a new Pearl Harbor."

São aprovadas leis como o Patriot Act que possibilitam algo como "authorization of indefinite detentions of immigrants; "sneak and peek" searches through which law enforcement officers search a home or business without the owner’s or the occupant’s permission or knowledge;the expanded use of "National Security Letters," which allow the FBI to search telephone, email and financial records without a court order; and the expanded access of law enforcement agencies to business records, including library and financial records."

"Usama Bin Laden is wanted in connection with the August 7,
1998, bombings of the United States Embassies in Dar es Salaam,
Tanzania, and Nairobi, Kenya. These attacks killed over 200 people.
In addition, Bin Laden is a suspect in other terrorist attacks
throughout the world."

É importante dizer ainda relativamente à desculpa para atacar o Afeganistão duas coisas:

continua...

According to Abbas, immediately thereafter Bush said: "God told me to strike at al Qaida and I struck them, and then he instructed me to strike at Saddam, which I did, and now I am determined to solve the problem in the Middle East. If you help me I will act, and if not, the elections will come and I will have to focus on them.

$sudo aptitude update
$sudo aptitude install clive youtube-dl

et voilá....downloads fresquinhos ;)

P.S. o clive até reconverte o formato flv:

Re-encode options:
Use the -y switch with ffmpeg to overwrite existing output files

--encoder=STRING e.g. --encoder="/usr/bin/ffmpeg -y -i %i %o"
-m, --mpeg re-encode extracted video to mpeg
-a, --avi re-encode extracted video to avi
-f, --flv re-encode extracted video to flv
-E, --no-encode explicitly turn off re-encoding

Corrupt countries were more likely to support the OOXML document format

"We recently closed a deal with the Nigerian Government. Maybe you heard about it, Steve. They were looking for an affordable hardware+software solution for their schools. The initial batch was 17,000 machines. We had a good answer to their need: the Classmate PC from Intel, with a customized Mandriva Linux solution. We presented the solution to the local government, they liked the machine, they liked our system, they liked what we offered them, the fact that it was open, that we could customize it for their country and so on.

Then your people entered the game and the deal got more competitive. I would not say it got dirty, but someone could have said that. They fought and fought the deal, but still the customer was happy to get CMPC and Mandriva."

"If you spy on my telephone calls, you can never have as big a picture of me as if you can read my hard drive," said Constanze Kurz, an activist with the Berlin-based hacker organization the Chaos Computer Club, which has pledged to find and publicize the first government Trojan.

"My communications, my private photos, my private films, all of my research. And if you install that Trojan on the computer, you can look not only at this data on the hard drive, but you can see what I'm typing, you can collect my thoughts as I'm typing them in," she said. "If you give me your computer for one hour, I will know everything about you."

Already, Romania, Cyprus, Latvia and Spain have laws that allow "online searches," according to a report from Germany's Interior Ministry, which conducted an informal survey in Europe. Switzerland and Slovenia appear to also allow such searches, and Sweden is in the process of adopting similar legislation, the report said.

In the U.S., where battles are being fought over warrantless surveillance of telephone and Internet communications, the FBI is known to have implanted software designed to identify target computers. But it is unknown, and the FBI won't say, whether the government has tried to surreptitiously search the contents of hard drives.

"I'm not aware of that technique being used in the United States," said Marc Rotenberg, president of the Washington-based Electronic Privacy Information Center. "But it's also not clear, given the current view of the president on his powers to conduct electronic surveillance, that it hasn't been used."

Europe has been scrambling in recent months to adopt new counter-terrorism measures as recent arrests in Britain, Germany and Denmark have shed light on the increased number of militants raised in Europe.

On Nov. 6, the European Union's justice commissioner, Franco Frattini, will propose a new set of counter-terrorism measures that is expected to include proposals to block Internet sites offering bomb-making recipes and to make online recruiting of terrorists a criminal offense."
